Honors English 6
Your assignment is to write a 5-paragraph persuasive essay on the Loch Ness monster. You will research the evidence for both the existence and the non-existence of Nessie. In your essay, you will present and analyze the evidence, as well as credibility and authority of the various people who have publically submitted evidence. You must ultimately take a stand on whether or not you believe in the possible existence of Nessie and what type of creature it might be, if it exists.
Your essay must begin with an introductory paragraph that starts with a grabber and includes a summary of the history of the Loch Ness monster. You will finish with a thesis statement that presents your opinion as to the existence of the Loch Ness monster, based on the evidence available.
Your three body paragraphs must all begin with a relevant topic sentence that expands on and presents specific evidence for your thesis. Each paragraph should stay focused on one topic. After presenting your evidence, you must then present the counterargument of that evidence. In other words, what does the other side (pro or con) say with regards to this topic or regarding this evidence? Finally, you will offer your rebuttal to this counterargument, in which you explain why the evidence supports either the existence or non-existence of the monster, depending on your point of view.
Your concluding paragraph must summarize the points you have made and restate your assertion/thesis in new words. This paragraph should build your argument point by point and state your position in the strongest language of the essay. Here is where you can present your best theory as to what might be going on (or what might have been going on) at Loch Ness. Finally, you should end with a "next steps" statement: what should happen in the near future with regards to Nessie?
Your essay must include a Works Cited page with properly formatted citations. You may use the Literature article as a source, but you need at least two other sources, one of which must be a web source. Parenthetical citations must also be included within the text of your essay.
Your essay will be graded on how well you follow the above criteria. Therefore, use this assignment sheet as a checklist to ensure you have included all the necessary elements.
