Learning Outcomes:
To be able to explain, compare and evaluate the roles of Malcolm X and Martin Luther King in the African American Civil Rights Movement

Task:
Your task is to produce a profile on Martin Luther King and Malcolm X and an essay comparing the similarities and differences between them.

Guidance/Support
This ILA is based around the historical concept of similarity and difference. This means investigating and comparing different events, people or movements in history. To draw comparisons in history, we need to think about in what ways are people/ events similar and in what ways are they different. The way that this can be explored is through different themes such as religion, legacy, beliefs and achievements.
Your ILA should be put together as a presentation (that can fit into and be stuck into your History book) and include:
1. A short introduction to the Civil Rights Movement and to Martin Luther King and Malcolm X. When and why did it begin, what were African Americans trying to achieve. Where did most of the protests take place?
2. A profile of Martin Luther King. This should include his date of birth and place of birth, his job, his religious beliefs, how he became involved in the civil rights movement, any influences, his main successes as a civil rights leader and his main aims - what was he trying to achieve for African Americans and how did he believe his aims should be achieved? You should also include how and when he died and at least one image.
3. A profile of Malcolm X.
4. Some sources: It is important to think about how other people have viewed Martin Luther King and Malcolm X and how this shows how similar or different they were. To do this you will need to find some historical sources showing different perspectives (views) of them. These can include pictures, written extracts from the time, historian’s views (you should use quotes to explain these), posters and film clips. When using these sources you will need to explain how they present either Martin Luther King or Malcolm X, and how the sources you have picked show them to be similar or different. A really good historian will select the best sources to support their enquiry. To do this you should think about:
• Where have the sources come from? Who produced them and why? Do you think the author had any reason to lie or exaggerate?

• Do they show a range of viewpoints (e.g. positive and negative; contemporary [from the time] and modern) of Martin Luther King and Malcolm X?

5. The last stage of your ILA will be to use your research to write an answer to the question ‘How different were Martin Luther King and Malcolm X?’
