People know Hernando Cortes from being the Spanish Conquistador who conquered the Aztec Empire. But let's learn the whole story.
Hernando Cortes was born in Medellin, Western Spain in 1485. He was sent at age 14 to attend a University to study law, but this wasn't what he enjoyed. So, Hernando returned home in 1501. He wanted fortune, and an adventurous life.
The Beginnings of Adventure
In 1504 Hernando sailed to Santo Domingo a.k.a. - The Dominican Republic. He was 19 and under the charge of Ovando (Spanish soldier from a noble family). In 1511 he joined Diego Velazquez and trekked to Cuba. There he helped Velazquez in his conquest of Cuba. Hernando gained a reputation in Cuba, people thought him to be daring and to be an obtainer of courage. In 1518 Hernando asked Velazquez to make him commander of the expedition to Mexico. He agreed, and as Hernando was on the ship to Mexico, Velazquez got suspicious of Hernando’s motives and cancelled his commission. Hernando ignored him and continued to Mexico. Cortes and his crew of 10 ships, 600 to 700 Spaniards, 18 horsemen, and pieces of cannon landed on the coast of Mexico on March 4, 1519.
A New Country
Hernando Cortes had a strange relationship with the natives to keep the balance of affection and fear. He would sometimes conciliate, other times he would basically scare the natives with his weapons. With this, Hernando took control of the city of Tobasco.
