Introduction

This Volume indicates the layout of the three datasets deposited at the Data Archive and contains the Codebooks required to de-code these data. There are three datasets, covering the strikes beginning between January 1893 and the end of January 1902 (PREJAN02.TXT), January 1903 and the end of December 1920 (PRE1921.TXT) and January 1921 and the end of December 1940 (PRE1940.TXT). Matters of interpretation and the rationales for the coding procedures employed are contained in Volume I.


1. The Layout of PREJAN02.TXT and PRE1921.TXT

These are TXT files laid out in a fixed format of 80 columns. There is one ‘logical record’, here corresponding to two ‘logical cards’ or lines of text, for each strike. The variables are arranged as in Table 1, which uses the Fortran conventions for describing data types. These are explained at the foot of the Table.

Iw describes an integer data field

wX indicates that a field is to be skipped on input and filled with blanks on


output

w is an integer constant specifying the number of characters


in the field

d is an integer constant specifying the number of decimal places to the


right of the decimal point.

2. The Layout of PRE1940.TXT

This is a TEXT file laid out in a fixed format of 127 columns. There is one ‘logical record’, here corresponding to two ‘logical cards’ or lines of text, for each strike. The variables are arranged as in Table 2, which again uses the Fortran conventions for describing data types. These were explained at the foot of Table 1.
