GHANDI SHOWS US THE WAY . . . OR IS IT MAO?

UNIT 9 – Asia’s path to Independence
This unit will examine the paths of 2 emerging powers in our world: India & China. We will follow their paths from ancient empire, to puppets of western powers, to strong, independent nations.

First, we will examine China’s roller coaster path from crumbling Monarchy to oppressed Japanese territory to Communist Revolution and their rise to World Power. We will also explore India’s path from a British Colony to an independent state and the largest democracy in the world. We will focus on India’s independence movement

We will contrast the leadership and revolutionary tactics of China’s Mao Zedong with India’s Mohandas Gandhi. We will explore where they have taken China and India today, and which is better off. . . .

LEARNING OBJECTIVES


  1. Identify the causes and effects of India’s and China’s fall from ancient imperial power to puppet of western nations on the modern cultures of each nation.

  2. Summarize the backgrounds of Gandhi and Mao, how that shaped them as leaders, their roles in their respective independence movements, and the effects they’ve had on their countries.

  3. Summarize and analyze China & India’s path to independence, including the interaction of Colonial and native leadership in the moves towards independence/modernity.

  4. Identify and describe the accomplishments and obstacles of modern, independent India and China.
