Families Doing Faith

12-10-12

Thanks for your understanding in the postponement of the Children's Christmas service due to some unexpected but much needed snow. We will try again next week, December 16.  Please bring your child to the Youth Room at  9:30 a.m. Sunday, December 16 for practice.  The service will be held at 10:30 a.m.  The Saturday service and the 8:30 a.m. Sunday service will be held as as usual.  We hope everyone will still join us for our presentation of "The Story of Jesus" as we are very much looking forward to sharing it with everyone!

This Week's Bible Verse

Isaiah 43:1 Fear not: for I have redeemed you, I have called you by your name; you are mine.

Faith Point

God has chosen you and calls you by name.

Caring Conversations

How does it feel when someone greets you and calls you by name?  Share a time when you felt very welcomed by someone who used your name.  Share a situation when you felt ignored or un-welcomed in a group. What could have happened that might have made you feel differently?

Devotions

Read this week's Bible verse. Have you ever been near people who are having a conversation but you're not really listening?  You may be reading or working on a project or in a conversation with someone else. You have no idea what they are talking about because you're not listening.... then you hear someone say your name.  Suddenly, they've captured your attention and you are intent on getting in on their conversation. Why is that?  Our names are special.  We all love to hear our own name. When someone uses your name, you know they notice you and that you matter.  We all want to feel like we matter in this world. Our Bible verse today assures us that we matter to God.  He has saved us.  We are chosen.  We are loved.  He knows our name and calls us by our name.

Rituals and Traditions

Our church is in the process of ordering the new hymnals. Geri, our church musician, arranged a beautiful version of "You Are Mine" hymn # 581 out of the new hymnal for Sursam Corda, our women's choir.  Maybe you remember hearing it.  Use the words as a meditation this week.

"You Are Mine"   ELW 581

I will come to you in the silence.  I will lift you from all your fear.

You will hear my voice.  I claim you as my choice.  Be still and know I am here.

Do not be afraid, I am with you. I have called you each by name.

Come and follow me.  I will bring you home. I love you and you are mine.

I am hope for all who are hopeless.  I am eyes for all who long to see.

In the shadows of the night, I will be your light. Come and rest in my name.

Do not be afraid, I am with you. I have called you each by name.

Come and follow me. I will bring you home. I love you and you are mine.

I am strength for all the despairing, healing for the ones who dwell in shame.

All the blind will see. The lame will all run free, and all will know my name.

Do not be afraid, I am with you. I have called you each by name.

Come and follow me. I will bring you home. I love you and you are mine.

I am the Word that leads all to freedom. I am the peace the world cannot give.

I will call your name, embracing all your pain.  Stand up now, walk, and live!

Do not be afraid, I am with you. I have called you each by name.

Come and follow me. I will bring you home. I love you and you are mine.

Acts of Service

One of the nicest things you can do for someone is to remember his or her name and use it when greeting and speaking. Make a conscious effort to use people's names this week.  Is there someone you see regularly but whose name you do not know?  Maybe it's the mail carrier, the person who checks you out at the grocery store, the neighbor down the street, or the person at church you see  but have never really met. Find out what their name is and greet them.  Notice their response.
