EVALUATING THE NEW DEAL AND THE ROLE OF THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT IN ECONOMIC REFORMS

Under Franklin Delano Roosevelt, the national government took an active role in attempting to improve our nation’s economy. During the Depression, the collapse of the stock market, the failure of banks, business failures and high unemployment had created a vicious cycle in our economy, and the entire nation struggled. FDR had three major goals in mind when each of the New Deal programs was proposed:

1. To provide relief – in the form of food, shelter, or direct monetary aid – to the poor and unemployed, particularly to

women and children. [RELIEF FOR THE POOR & UNEMPLOYED]

2. To stimulate the economy through jobs programs – to lessen unemployment – and direct aid to struggling businesses.

[JOBS PROGRAMS]

3. To prevent future recessions by introducing new government regulations on the economy, banks, and the stock market.

[GOVERNMENT REGULATION OF ECONOMY]

Fill in the chart below, and evaluate each New Deal program’s success or failure. Did the program help Americans during the Great Depression? Try to explain how each program would have influenced the economy. Was the program successful? Why or why not? Use your textbook, pages 778 – 780 and the PowerPoint, “FDR and the New Deal NOTES” in order to complete the chart below:

(FERA) – The Federal Emergency Relief Administration.

The FERA was a government program which gave federal money to the states, so that they could provide basic needs like food and shelter to the poor. Churches, food banks, and shelters received the money.

RELIEF FOR THE POOR & UNEMPLOYED.

The program was successful, but it could not be maintained permanently without losing money. Even if it did lose money, it would be worth it to prevent homeless people and children from suffering or going hungry.
