European Exploration (Lesson 1 Vocabulary)

Protestant- any Western Christian who is not a Catholic

Puritans- Were a group of English Protestants (between 1600’s to the 1700’s) who sought to “purify/clean” the Church of England from all Roman Catholic practices. They were considered extremists because they did not like fun things. They became the pilgrims!

Pilgrims- a traveler who is on a journey to a holy place. This is often a physical journey to some special religious place. The pilgrims we’re talking about moved from England to North America to gain religious freedom.

Mayflower Compact- a document signed by 41 English pilgrims on the ship Mayflower on November 11, 1620. It was the first written form of government established in what is now the United States. 

Colony- A region of the world governed by a distant country. It is dependent on the parent country.

Economy- system of production, distribution or trade, and consumption of goods and services in a given place. Includes individuals, businesses, organizations, or governments. Transactions and exchanges often involve currency/money.

Constitution- A document that organizes a representative government.

Representative Government- a system in which people elect leaders to run a city, state, or country for them.

Magna Carta- the first written constitution in European history (1215 AD). Provided written rights for powerful English citizens. Would inspire the US Constitution in 1787 AD.

English Bill of Rights- Passed in 1689 guaranteed even more rights for English citizens than were covered in the earlier Magna Carta.
