English Revolution Song (To the tune of “Frere Jacques”)
The Dynasty of the Stuarts

The Dynasty of the Stuarts

Loved Divine Rights

Loved Divine Rights

For King Charl-es getting money was a plight

His requests to Parliament caused a fight

Ship money, tonnage and poundage

Ship money, tonnage and poundage

The Court of Star Chamber,

The Court of Star Chamber

These were some wa-ys Charles got mon-ey

Could he be lamer?

Could he be lamer?
Charles was hated

Charles was hated

Then Parliament dissolved

Then Parliament dissolved

Then Charles took his army

And started a Civil War

And nothing was resolved

And nothing was resolved.

Cavaliers vs. The Roundheads

Cavaliers vs. The Roundheads

The Roundheads won

The Roundheads won

Charles was tried for treason, without a valid reason

Now Charles is dead, he lost his head.

Now England is a Commonwealth,

Now England is a Commonwealth

With Cromwell at its head

With Cromwell at its head

The Puritans hat-ed fun, like Christmas and homeruns

England spat hiss and boo

England spat hiss and boo
In 1660, In 1660

The monarchy returned

The monarchy returned

The Test Act was created

The Catholics did hate it

Cause they were spurned

Cause they were spurned

Then James the second

Then James the second

Supported the Pope!

England said nope

Then his Protestant daughter

Threw him from power

Parliament had won

Divine Right is done!

Restoration Sketch that captures the action
-After Cromwell died, Charles II asked back to rule to avoid another civil war

-Outwardly agreed to limitations on power, but never really followed them

-Fun-loving person, scandalous lifestyle. Got rid of Blue laws

-Wanted to bring absolute monarchy back to England, Tories supported him; Whigs were against this (first political parties)

-Regicides (people who killed Charles I) drawn and quartered, Cromwell and dead Roundheads dug up and hung outside Westminster Abby

-Charles was Catholic and tried to protect Catholic rights. Parliament showed their power by passing the Test Act (Catholics cannot be in position of power (ie. political office, professions etc.)

Glorious Revolution
-Catholic paranoia high in England; Popish Plot: Catholic trying to take over England.

-James II made worse by hiring Catholics despite Test Act

-Rebellion broke out, supported an illegitimate son of Charles II taking throne
-James instituted a reign of terror: Bloody Assizes Suspected rebels executed

-Parliament invited James’s Protestant daughter Mary and her husband William to take throne, they did and James was forced to abdicate and flee England

-Mary and William forced to sign Bill of Rights limiting their power and making parliament the real government

-England officially a constitutional monarchy.
