By the authority of the Orange County Board of Supervisors,
the following resolution is hereby issued:
WHEREAS, Disneyland opened in the City of Anaheim on July 17, 1955, marking a new era in amusement parks, and is the only theme park designed and built under the direct supervision of Walt Disney; and
WHEREAS, Disneyland has grown from a single theme park with one hotel and 1,280 cast members in 1955 into a full-scale resort with two of the world’s ten most-visited theme parks, 2,500 hotel rooms, 150 restaurants, and 85 other retail locations; and
WHEREAS, the Disneyland Resort model has been exported around the world from Orange County, California, to Orange County, Florida in 1971; Tokyo, Japan in 1983; Paris, France in 1992; Hong Kong, China in 2005; and soon Shanghai, China; and
WHEREAS, Disneyland is the most visited tourist attraction not only in Orange County but in all of California, with nearly 17,000,000 guests in 2014 alone; and
WHEREAS, Disneyland and its sister parks comprise nine of the top ten most visited amusement parks in the world, and more people have visited Disneyland than any other theme park in the world, with over 700,000,000 guests since it opened in 1955, a figure twice the current population of the United States; and
WHEREAS, the Disneyland Resort is a critical part of Orange County’s economic engine, as the resort employs more people in Orange County than any other employer, with a workforce of 28,000 cast members, a number larger than the entire populations of the Orange County cities of Seal Beach, Laguna Beach, Laguna Woods, La Palma, Los Alamitos, and Villa Park; and
WHEREAS, the Disneyland Resort generates $5,700,000,000 in economic impact in Southern California with more than $3,000,000,000 for Orange County alone, and more than 25,000 jobs at other Orange County businesses rely on visitors to the Disneyland Resort; and
WHEREAS, the Walt Disney Company’s philanthropic donations in 2013 alone totaled $370,000,000, with over 667,000 VoluntEARS hours contributed by Disney employees that impacted an estimated 4,000,000 families through public works projects, park construction, and donations to non-profit organizations; and
WHEREAS, “I’m going to Disneyland!” has become a common exclamation of celebration after prevailing in national championships and other major competitions; and
WHEREAS, Disneyland, “The Happiest Place on Earth,” is undoubtedly the most famous location in all of Orange County, an icon known throughout the entire world;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT THE ORANGE COUNTY BOARD OF SUPERVISORS does hereby proclaim July 17, 2015 to be “Disneyland Day” in Orange County, congratulate Disneyland on its sixtieth anniversary, and welcome the world to Orange County to celebrate this joyous event.
