Directions: After you finish reading the background of Sir Thomas More’s Utopia, you are then to create your own version of a utopian society. You must create a name for this place, as well as a flag that symbolizes your new civilization. After you create a name and flag, answer the following questions regarding your utopia.
Thomas More tried to answer the question of “how might a truly good society be organized?” He told about a peace-loving people who lived in an imaginary land called Utopia, a name meaning “no place” in Greek. Utopia was a nearly perfect society based on reason and mercy. Greed, corruption, war, and crime had been weeded out. In Utopia, Sir Thomas More described a society in which everyone had enough food, clothing, and possessions for a comfortable life. No one had more than necessary or sought wealth for its own sake.
“Silver and gold get no more respect from anyone than their intrinsic value deserves-which is obviously far less than that of iron. According to this system, plates and drinking vessels, though beautifully designed, are made of quite cheap stuff like glass or earthenware. But silver and gold are the normal materials…for the humblest items of household equipment, such as chamber-pots. They also use chains of solid gold to immobilize slaves and anyone who commits a really shameful crime is forced to go about with gold rings on his ears and fingers, a gold necklace round his neck, and a crown of gold on his head…It is much the same with jewels if they happen to come across one, they pick it up and polish it for some toddler to wear. At first, children are terribly proud of such jewelry – until they are old enough to notice that its only worn in the nursery. Then….they give it up.”
