What Is A Critique?


A critique in art is an oral or written discussion intended to describe, analyze, interpret and judge a piece of art work.

Describe

  • What do you see in the picture?

  • What colors did the artist use?

  • Is it realistic or abstract?

  • Is there a description by the art work?

Analyze

  • What elements of art are used in the art work?

  • How was the piece of art made?

  • What is the subject matter (people, animals, objects, buildings) doing in the picture?

Interpret

  • How does the art make you feel when you look at it?

  • Does it remind you of something you have experienced?

  • What do you think the artist is trying to say?

Judge

  • Do you like it or not like it? Why?

  • What makes it successful? What makes it a failure?

  • Compare and Contrast it to another piece of art.
