Story about john wesley ross' death
John Wesley Ross was killed by bushwackers during the civil war. As the story goes, he was tied onto the back of a filly by the bushwackers who took from from richland creek in newton county to big piney creek in pope county, ar. where they shot him in a cane break adjoining the old felkins place about one mile south of where graves creek enters the big piney. rhoda standridge ross begged for her husband's release. having failed in the effort, she and a relative woman who was a standridge, followed behind the bushwackers out of sight. hearing the shot, she hurried to her husband and found him dead. she and the woman buried john wesley ross, sr. in a shallow grave in the cane break. she covered her husbands face with her apron before she covered him with the bottom land dirt.
versions of the story differ. some descendants differ. some say he was killed by being dragged behind a horse by the bushwackers. the stories may differ but all contain the fact that john wesley was killed by bushwackers and buried by rhoda and another woman. some feel his death may be in connection with the hanging of union sholdiers near lewis meeks house. one version suggests that he was home from and was in the army. no service record has been found for him. the author located reocrds for several john rosses in ar service but all came home alive.
in the 1880s, james ross--the writers grandfather--bought a farm on big piney creek not far from the canebottom where his father had been killed and buried. james ross and rhoda ross yates are reported to have said that ehir mother, rhoda standridge ross, never could locate the grave where she had buried the body of her husband. now, the location is lost in the bottom land of piney creek.
us land records for ark., jasper , newton county land situated in the sw quarter of the nw quarter of section 30, twonship 13 north, range 10 west contained 37 acres more or less was purchased by john w. ross sr and rhoda standridge ross in 1859 for 47 dollars and 50 cents , cert. #10373. this homestead was near richland cemetary. his family is counted in the 1850 ar. census as westley ross and in 1860 under john w. ross. rhoda and john married about 1840. she was born in tenn. on may 8, 1824. she died near treat, pope count6y, ar. in 1896 at the home of her son. john wesley ross jr. and was buried at the shannon cemetery, treat, ar. as far as the author knows, there are no pictures of john ross or rhoda. when she was in her seventies, she was chided for planting fruit trees and was reminded that she would never see them bare. she replied, i might not, but my grandchildren will.

ross and kin--john wesley ross, sr.
john w. ross, sr was born (1823-186_). He appears on the 1850 pope county census enumerated by Andrew scott. he was in house 314 and listed as westley ross, farmer, born in tenn. other members of his family are rhoda, 24, tarlton,8, alexander, 4, and john , 2,. Thus we know he was in ar. in 1842 when tal was born. A descendant said he was a scout for the trail of tears. He would have been about 15 to 17, so this is possible. the author of ross and kin thinks he might have came to ar. from the same county as some of his relatives. he mentions white, smith, dekalb and warren counties.
Fred ross, the author's father, had heard from his parents that a dr. josh or gilbert holland was john wesley ross father. holland came from mass. to miss and tenn to teach in the indian school. there he met a ross girl and had a child by her. they were never married. the author has checked out the dr. holland and he was only 7 years old when john w. ross was born. he also said that john w. was raised by a meeks or meigs family. Other last names given for john wesley are mulholland, hollinger, collins or meeks. one story says he was adopted. he ran away from this family. he was blamed for all bad things that happened because he was a half breed. most of the stories agree that he was a half breed.
Its very unlikely that ross was the name of john w. father but much more likely that it was his mothers last name.
There are meeks all over carroll, newton, and surrounding counties. i grew up with many in carroll county. my father always said they were cherokee indians.
