DESCENDANTS OF SAMUEL ALEXANDER SAMPLES

=========== == ====== ========= =======

Don Norman
Tracing the family histories of the Samples families of Clay County, WV is very difficult, as two and perhaps three different lines have been discovered during research. One Samples line can be traced to Ireland through two brothers who were British soldiers captured at Yorktown, VA during the American Revolutionary War, and the other can be traced to Ohio near the present site of Pomeroy. The eldest member of the Samples family living in the Pomeroy area was named Robert and he is not to be confused with a younger Robert Samples, brother of Samuel Alexander Samples II.
1. SAMUEL ALEXANDER SAMPLES
Samuel Alexander Samples I was born about 1755, probably in

Ireland. He and his brother John Samples were soldiers in the

British Army and were captured when Lord Cornwallis' army surrendered

to General George Washington at Yorktown Virginia October 19, 1781.

The British soldiers captured after this battle were marched to a

prison camp at Charles Town, Virginia. They were not closely guarded

and were encouraged to escape, because the new Nation did not need any

more people to feed. Samuel and his brother escaped, but became

separated and never saw each other again.

Samuel and his wife Lucinda migrated to Adair City, Greenup

County, KY. They died there, leaving four small sons.

3.SAMUEL ALEXANDER SAMPLES II 1.SAMUEL ALEXANDER SAMPLES

Samuel Alexander Samples II was born at Adair City, Greenup

County, KY in 1795 and died in what is now Clay County, WV in 1858.

He was a son of Samuel Alexander Samples I and Lucinda. His parents

died young and he was apprenticed to a blacksmith named Henry Ralston.

He became dissatisfied with his taskmaster and ran away. He lived for

a while at Pomeroy, Ohio, where he met and married Jane Samples.

Jane was born in 1801, died November 8, 1883 in Clay County, WV.

She was a daughter of Robert A. Samples. Do not confuse Robert A.

Samples with Samuel's brother; they were different people. Although

the 1880 census lists Jane as having been born in Virginia, she may

have been born just across the river in Ohio. Ohio did not become a

State until 1803 and her birth may have been reported in Virginia.

The 1880 census for Clay County, WV, shows a 79 year old widowed Jane

Samples living with her son, Andrew Samples and states that both her

parents were born in Virginia.

Harvey "Uncle Harve" Samples was born September 6, 1836 and died March 30, 1927. He was a son of Hiram Sr. and Bathsheba (Alderson) Samples. He married Sarah Jane Jones who was born October 19, 1838 and died October 1, 1917. She was a daughter of John and Sarah Jane (Samples) Jones and a grand daughter of Peter Samples.

In 1858, Harvey Samples was appointed Deputy Sheriff of Clay County, VA, under Sheriff Christopher C. Campbell. In 1866, Harvey was elected Sheriff of Clay County and served a term. During the years 1881 to 1883, Harvey was a member of the West Virginia State Senate. The capitol of WV was then in Wheeling and Harvey traveled to and from the capitol on the steamboats plying the Ohio and Kanawha Rivers. Harvey was a member of the House of Delegates

during 1887.

Harvey and his son, Bratton M. Samples, were partners in timber, milling and merchandising. They owned a large sawmill, a feed grinding mill, and a general store. They also engaged in farming and kept cattle, hogs and poultry. H. Samples and Son sent several large log rafts down the Elk River. They also sent flat boats loaded with saw lumber, barrel staves, barrel hoops, raw furs, chickens, eggs and other produce. The rafts and boats were sold either as logs or as lumber and the voyagers returned in dugout canoes that they had carried along on top of the boats or rafts. When the Charleston, Clendenin and Sutton Railroad was completed around 1894, the river boating era ended.

Samuel W. "Long Sam" Samples, a son of Hiram Sr. and Elizabeth (Hall) Samples, was born in November 1868 and died in 1962. He married Melinda Dow Procious. Melinda, a daughter of Adam and Elizabeth (Furlong) Procious, was born in Armstrong County, Pennsylvania, in November 1874 and died in 1962.

"Long Sam" Samples bought 140 acres of land from Joshua and Sarah Moore on January 17, 1881. "Long Sam" was fifteen years old at the time.

"Long Sam" Samples was only one of four Samuel W. Samples' that lived in the Twistabout community during his life time. The others were, "Short Sam", "Nicholas County Sam" and "Lying Sam." "Long Sam" and "Short Sam" were neighbors and were never know to agree on anything, except that there should be a fence between their properties. However, each had his inflexible idea of where the

property lines ran, and each built a fence where he thought the line laid. These two fence were from eight to twelve feet apart, leaving a lane between then that was about a half mile long and that was locallyknown as "Samples Lane."
