Notes for GEORGE LAYTON FORTNER:

Information from Paul Brockman:

Two of George's brothers fought in the Confederate Army, and one of them

died while in POW camp in Chicago. George and a brother were in the

Union Army, George for a very brief time near the end of the war, or so

mother and Aunt Ruth told me. One of his brothers had three very hardy

grandsons (my second cousins, albeit a lot older): two of them died in

July 1994 at ages 95 and 96 of pneumonia contracted while helping their

cows give birth to calves in a January blizzard--both were still active

cattle and corn farmers in Grant County. Their older brother Alvie died

the following year at age 101--his son Dale told me it was from

heartache at the loss of his brothers. Alvie had retired from farming

in 1987 or 1988 when Dale reached 55, retired from the Kentucky State

Police (which he had commanded briefly before he got tired of Frankfort

and assigned himself back to Grant County), and Alvie figured Dale was

"old enough to know how to take care of the land."
