Support for the St. Francis Dam Disaster National Memorial Act (HR 5357)
Dear Congressman Hastings:
Congressman Buck McKeon recently introduced a bill honoring and memorializing a catastrophic event that occurred 86 years ago in the Santa Clarita Valley in Los Angeles County. This was the failure of the St. Francis Dam. It is appropriate that the hundreds of people who died as a result of the disaster be remembered. This was the largest man-made disaster in California history and America’s deadliest civil engineering failure of the 20th Century.
Many people are unaware of this event in our history. With a memorial to the people who died, the National Park Service and other agencies can develop appropriate materials so this becomes a part of our living history. Children will be able to visit the visitor’s center and museum and learn about their local history. This is tremendously important to Santa Clarita and all Californians. It is a great thing to honor those who died, and to memorialize the site for future generations. I strongly encourage you to approve this bill to go to the floor of Congress for a vote. My understanding is that Senator Boxer is ready to support it with a similar bill in the Senate.
Thank you for helping my fellow citizens in Los Angeles and Ventura Counties with the guidance and support of Congressman McKeon to bring this bill to fruition with passage in Congress and the Senate in the current session..
Thank you again for your efforts toward this important goal. We look forward to the passage of this important bill.
