Creating Your Own Fictional Character

This assignment for the short story unit will be a descriptive writing summative task. You have seen a lot of different examples of characters and now you will be creating one of your own. When creating a character you must not only include a physical description but a description of their personality.

Provided for you are:


  1. a character trait list to help you in your descriptive writing

  2. a character chart that must be filled out as part of your rough work. This will provide you with the basic elements for your character.

  1. background

  2. personality traits

From this chart you will expand and create a fully rounded out character. Some questions to help you start creating a character:



  1. Do not focus on the character’s name at first – that may come later

  2. Is your character a hero or villain?

  3. Is your character female or male?

  4. Do they have a purpose or goal to achieve?

  5. What kind of attitude do they have?

  6. Do they have any habits, good or bad? What are they?

  7. What are their biggest fears or secrets?

There will be time given in class to work on this assignment. Your final product will be 1 – 2 pages in length double spaced typed. If it is hand written it will be 3 – 4 pages in length.
