STUDY QUESTIONS FOR AP QUIZ 2: Lord of the Flies CHAPTERS 4-5

Complete the following study questions by MARKING IN YOUR BOOK

Read the passage from Chapter 4 of Lord of the Flies, “Painted Faces and Long Hair,” which begins “The smaller boys were known now by the generic title” and ends “and presently Percival was crying again” (pages 59-61) carefully.

  1. Underline and comment on the descriptions of the “littluns” in the first paragraph. What qualities do they exhibit? How do they behave?

  2. What is clear about Henry based upon the paragraph, “Three were playing here now”?

  3. Comment on Johnny and Henry’s reaction to Roger and Maruice’s cruelty to Percival. Look at what they do when the older boys are destroying the castles, and what Johnny does later.

  4. Comment on the description of Roger in the paragraph, “Roger remained”. What words are used to describe him physically and in terms of personality? What might this foreshadow about his character?

Passage 5. Read the passage from Chapter 5 of Lord of the Flies, “Beast From Water,” which begins “He could see a whiteness in the gloom” and ends “he shrank away defenseless to his seat” (pages 88-89) carefully. Then answer the following questions on the basis of what is stated or implied in the passage.

  1. Comment on the phrase “a whiteness in the gloom”- what does it refer to? What does it mean symbolically?

  2. Underline and write about Simon’s thoughts and behavior when he tries to speak up. What do we learn about him?

  3. What is “mankind’s essential illness”? How does this relate to his question, “what’s the dirtiest thing there is?” Comment in your book.

  4. Comment on the boys’ response to Simon’s suggestion about the beast. In particular, how does Piggy respond?

  5. How do the children react to Jack’s use of the “crude expressive syllable”? Why do they do this?
