Studies in the Impact of Cambridge Structural Database Activities on Spatial Ability of Sophomore Organic Chemistry Students

Smah Abdelhamid

Faculty Advisor: Susan Hornbuckle

College of Arts and Sciences, Department of Natural Sciences

Abstract:

Students in a first semester Organic Chemistry course participated in a spatial ability research study. Cambridge Structural Database activities were designed and incorporated into classroom assignments that required the usage of 3D imaging from the CSD website. The impact of the usage of the Cambridge Structural Database was measured through Pre- and post examination using The Purdue Visualization of Rotations (ROT) test. Impact was also measured via student performance on course exam items requiring spatial reasoning. Results were compared to a control group that did not complete the CSD activities. Statistical analysis regarding student improvement in spatial ability while using Cambridge Structural Database and taking Organic Chemistry I will be presented.
