Christmas Around the World Requirements and Rubric

Christmas Around the World is an opportunity to share and celebrate cultures across the globe. Many cultures all over the world take time to celebrate life, religion, and culture during what we know as the “Christmas season”. Through this project you will learn and come to understand more about the lives of your classmates and community and develop and understanding of the world around us.

Step 2: Background and Important Information

Begin your research. This is where you need to make a solid effort to find true and accurate information about the country and holiday/celebration you are researching. Your research should include information on the following subject areas and you will need to site all of your sources in MLA format. You may NOT use Wikipedia and need at least 3 sources. You will need to take notes on the research you have not YOU MAY NOT copy and paste information into your report. You must write EVERYTHING in your own words. Plagiarism will not be tolerated.

Step 3: Creative Presentation and Celebration

This next step is where you will organize your research into a meaningful and interesting presentation. You must used a tri-fold poster board or Powerpoint for the presentation and you will need to have a handout of some kind for the class (a brochure, flyer, invitation, etc) that YOU and YOUR PARTNER created. YOUR WRITTEN WORK IS DUE ON THE DAY OF YOUR PRESENTATION.

    2. A map showing us where the country where they celebrate this holiday is located

    3. Pictures of the tradition being prepared and celebrated

    4. Should be fun, interesting and visually stimulating

    5. 5-10 slides (if you do a PowerPoint)

  2. Recreate part of the ritual or celebration for the class

    1. You can bring in food, music, teach us a dance, teach us a prayer, song or chant, show us the clothing that is typically worn, bring in a story that is told along with the celebration- anything that helps us to understand and experience this holiday or tradition.

    2. You need to explain this well and have the necessary materials and information to teach or demonstrate to us how this is celebrated

  3. Handout (8th Grade ONLY) must include:

    1. Basic information about the country or countries where the holiday is being celebrated

    2. 5 important facts from your tri-fold or powerpoint presentation (also from Step 2, Part 3).

    3. Pictures of the tradition being prepared or celebrated

    4. Directions (recipe, instructions) for how to re-create the part of the tradition we celebrated in class.

    5. Should be colorful, interesting and creative.
