Benjamin Franklin’s political snake

The “Join or Die” sketch was a famous political cartoon made by Benjamin Franklin (and was in fact the first political cartoon published for American newspapers). Inside of the cartoon are the then British colonies represented as parts of a snake, which are drawn in such a way that the cartoon can be taken as a generalized map. It was a means for Benjamin to express his opinion of the colonies being fragmented and to try to bring them together as a united from against the French expansion.
