Colony Flyer Project

You are from _________________________ colony and have lived a very happy life in America for 5 years. Life is good but your colony desperately needs new settlers or it might not make it. Fearing disaster, you get a job as a real estate agent and sail off to England to convince people to settle in your colony. America is a very tough sell; people are afraid to just pack up their bags and leave England.

Assignment

1) Develop a flyer. This flyer will provide basic information on your colony.

2) Give a presentation to the class on your colony. You must act as a salesperson and sell the colony.
Here is your assignment broken down into steps:
Step One: Research

Find and read information related to your assigned colony. The attached research guide will have to be entirely filled out. Books are available in Ms. Carrie’s classroom and in the computer lab for you to use.

Step Two: Make a slogan about your colony that you will “ sell” to us

Ask yourself this question: Of all the information I learned about my colony, what is the single-most important characteristic about my colony that makes it unique? Write it out in a sentence. (This will be your slogan.)

Step Three: Make your flyer

Your flyer will be typed using a piece of computer paper (8 ½ x 11). All of the required information must fit on one page. Your flier should look professional and make people want to move to your colony! Look at the rubric to see what needs to be included.

Step Four: Planning your sales pitch

Now the creative part comes in. You will design how you are going to sell your colony to the rest of the class. Your will be given 2 minutes to make your presentation. Here are the components of an effective presentation:

  • Introduction: Tell us what colony you researched, the slogan you created and the location of your colony.

  • Body: Come up with an engaging way to present the information you found about your colony.

  • Conclusion: End strong. Remind us what your slogan is for your colony and wrap up selling your colony to your classmates.

Step Five: Rehearse your presentation

Practice, practice and practice! During your practice, constantly ask yourself if you are able to make good eye contact, are you using a strong speaking voice, and are you engaging your audience?

Step Six: Present your flyer to the class

After all of your hard work and preparation you will present your flyer to your classmates.
