Annual Archdiocesan Respect Life Essay Contest

2015-2016 School Year
Angels are powerful, invisible spiritual beings who provide us with physical protection and spiritual guidance. The Catechism says that "from it's beginning until death, human life is surrounded by their watchful care and intercession." Angels can be of great help and inspiration to us in protecting life and promoting human dignity.

Grades 1 - 2

From the moment God creates us---even before we are born---He gives us the gift of a Guardian Angel. Our Angel watches over us throughout our whole life and helps and protects us. Write a short prayer to your Guardian Angel. You may want to draw a picture too.

Grades 3 - 4

Prayer is one of the best ways we can help the weakest among us---the unborn, the sick and dying, the poor and homeless. Many people pray directly to God asking for His help. Others pray to His Blessed Mother, while still others pray to a favorite saint. But there is another powerful group who will listen to our prayers on behalf of human life---the Angels. Angels are powerful spiritual beings sent by God. They can help us spread the pro-life message. Write a prayer to your Guardian Angel and the Guardian Angels of the unborn, the helpless, the sick and dying, asking them for help and protection.

Grades 5 - 6

Angels were the first messengers to share the news of Christ's birth. The Archangel Gabriel announced to Mary that she was to conceive and bear Jesus within her womb. We can turn to the Angels for help with spreading the pro-life message, since they were the first to proclaim the Gospel of Life to all humanity the night Jesus came into the world. Write a prayer to the Angels asking for their assistance in spreading the truth about the value of every human life from conception until natural death.

Grades 7 - 8

When Jesus was suffering His passion in the Garden of Gethsemane the night before His crucifixion and death, Scripture tells us that Angels came to comfort Him. Think of all those who are harmed by abortion---the baby, the mother and father, those leading others to have an abortion, the doctors and nurses performing abortions. Compose a prayer to the Guardian Angels of those involved in abortion. Ask them to intercede for the conversion of these individuals. How could these people help the mother through her pregnancy instead of ending it? How could they be encouraged to avoid temptation in the future and guided away from the Culture of Death?

Grades 9 - 12

It is important to remember the powerful intercession of Saint Michael the Archangel, who was assigned by God to fight Satan and the other evil spirits who roam the world seeking the ruin of souls. Not surprisingly, Satan is a powerful enemy of life and is active in spreading the darkness of the Culture of Death. San Francisco's annual Walk for Life West Coast has become a visible battleground between those who choose life and those who wish to remain in darkness. At its core, this is a spiritual battle in which prayer is the foundation of all our efforts on behalf of the unborn. Write a prayer to Saint Michael the Archangel asking for his protection for the Walk for Life, his assistance in fighting the evil of abortion, and his intercession for the repentance and conversion of those who provide and promote abortion.
