Proposal Guidelines and Application Form

Established in September 2002


To sponsor faculty teaching and student learning

to perpetuate and further Italian language and culture.


To sponsor lectures, symposia and foreign travel by faculty and students.

To sponsor cultural affairs and other activities that can help faculty, students

and the general public to achieve a better understanding of the Italian language and culture

through the history, literature, art and philosophy of Western Civilization.

Call for Proposals

The Amelia V. Gallucci-Cirio Endowment
Through a generous donation of $1,000,000 from the late Amelia Gallucci-Cirio, Class of 1938, the Fitchburg State University Foundation, Inc. established an endowed fund to provide support for activities and projects that promote Mrs. Gallucci-Cirio’s long-held interest in the study of Italian language, culture, and Western Civilization. Each year, net earnings produced by the endowment will be available to support projects, which conform to the guidelines established by the endowment agreement. A selection committee comprised of the university’s chief academic officer, an Italian language faculty member, chair of the Department of Humanities, chair of the Center for Italian Culture Advisory Board, and the Dean of Graduate and Continuing Education, shall review all proposals and recommend finalists to the Fitchburg State University Foundation Board of Directors at their annual meeting in the fall.
Projects will be evaluated within the following general categories:

1. Educational materials: software, texts, movies, videos, or equipment that can support the study of Italian language, Italian culture and/or Western Civilization in the classroom or other venue.
2. Study grants or scholarships for study in the U.S. or abroad: support for students or faculty to take classes in Italian language; support for faculty or students to pursue academic studies of Italian culture or Western Civilization; support for scholarly work in Italian Studies and Western Civilization; support for visiting professorships at Fitchburg State University; or supplemental funding for Italian language instruction at Fitchburg State University.

1. Center for Italian Culture: support for programs or activities sponsored by the CIC.
2. Cultural programs: support for cultural programs and activities related to Italian language and culture including, but not limited to, literature, art and music.

2013–2014 Application

2. Describe the project or activity (300 words or less) and provide an estimated timeline for completion of the project.

3. Describe how the project/activity supports the teaching/learning of Italian language, study of

Italian culture, and/or study of Western Civilization (200 words or less).

4. What are the roles of the participants?

5. Where will the project or activities be held? Indicate the dates of activities related to the project.

6. If the project or activity involves a partnership(s), a letter of support from the agency and/or participant’s employer(s) should be attached.
Detailed budget: The budget should include all information needed to assess the appropriateness of the expenditures, such as information on the agency, course catalogue information or prices for items from vendors.

Please also include:

a. For what portion of the total budget are you requesting funding for?

b. If you are asking for partial funding, please indicate the other sources of funding to complete your project/activity.
Other items to be addressed in the budget may include the following:

* Items purchased under these categories become property of the University and will be catalogued in the Amelia V. Gallucci-Cirio Library and housed in the Center for Italian Culture.

NOTE: All funded projects must complete spending between Nov. 1, 2013 and Oct. 31, 2014. Receipts must be submitted within two weeks of the completion of the project or no later than Oct. 31, 2013.
