Textbook

Read, study and outline Chapters 1,2,3,4 in the main text.

Outlines must be:

  • Neatly written – NOT TYPED

  • 5 pages long (every line)

  • Organized by topic / subtopic / specific examples, etc.

  • GOOD OUTLINES ARE THE KEY TO DOING WELL IN THIS CLASS

This will be due on the first day of class.

These outlines will be graded. They are worth 10 points each.

PORTRAIT OF AMERICA, VOLUME I

Read and study the first 4 selections (note that the each chapter has 2 reading selections) in Volume I. Write a brief synopsis of each article in 150 words. Also, be sure to explain which of the following themes applies best to each reading during the time period covered by that reading:

  • Identity (What is an “American”)

  • Work, exchange, and technology

  • Peopling (Migration, immigration)

  • Politics and power

BOOK REVIEW
Choose a NONFICTION book that is about American history and write a one page review of that book. Given the key focus for Advance Placement U.S. history is on social history, I would suggest a book that covers one of the following areas: Native American history (Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee by Dee Brown is a good choice), the Great Depression, women’s history – any time period (Founding Mothers: The Women Who Raised Our Nation by Cokie Roberts is good here), the civil rights movement, etc.
FILM REVIEW
I would also like each of you to watch an historical movie over the summer. Examples: “Amistad”, “Pearl Harbor”, “Patton”, “Seabiscuit”, “The New World’, ”Lincoln”, “12 Years a Slave”, etc. Write a brief summary of the movie you watched. Describe the film and analyze it using the same “themes” used for the Portrati Reader selections – one page typed.
